Love is one of the most talked-about topics in the world, yet it is often misunderstood as simply a feeling. Paul makes clear in 1 Corinthians 13 that love is not a state of being but a series of deliberate actions practiced over and over again. Spiritual gifts like prophecy, tongues, and miraculous faith are given by the Holy Spirit to strengthen the body of Christ, but without love, they are empty and meaningless. Love is patient, kind, generous, and selfless. It does not keep score, does not seek attention, and does not quit when people disappoint. Every description of love in 1 Corinthians 13 is ultimately a description of Jesus Himself. While spiritual gifts are temporary and will one day no longer be needed, love never expires. Faith, hope, and love remain, and the greatest of these is love.
