Long before the Apostles’ Creed, Christians used common words and phrases to summarize the faith they had received from the apostles. Known as the “rule of faith,” these truths helped believers clearly identify what they believed about God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, salvation, the church, and the hope we have in Christ. Eventually, these truths became a simple confession of faith. A declaration that said, in essence, “This is what I believe. This is who I belong to.” The Creed was never meant to be simply a list of ideas to memorize, but a declaration of faith in a world filled with competing beliefs and loyalties. As we walk through the Apostles’ Creed, we’ll rediscover the foundational truths that unite us as followers of Jesus and ask: What do we believe? Why do we believe it? If we truly believe it, how should it change the way we live?
